Sugar
A sugary diet not only causes weight gain—researchers have also concluded that it can make your skin look less vibrant and more wrinkled. This is due to a natural occurring process called glycation, where sugar in your bloodstram latches on to proteins to form damaging, new molecules called advanced glycation end products (AGEs). The more sugar you consume, the more AGEs you will develop. These harm surrounding proteins like collagen and elastin, which keep skin youthful, firm, and elastic. Wrinkling and sagging occurs after these proteins are damaged and collagen and elastin become dry and weak. According to a study published in the British Journal of Dermatology, these effects begin around the age of 35 and increase fairly quickly after that.
Smart Tip:
Limit added sugar to no more than 10% of total calories. *It’s difficult to eliminate sugar altogether, but limiting sugar can help.
Example:
For a 45-year-old woman of average height (5-foot-4), that is 160 calories or 10 teaspoons from added sugar which is about the same as a single can of Coca-Cola or six Hershey’s Kisses.
Facts:
- The average American consumes 31 teaspoons of added sugar that equals 465 calories.
- Sugar is often in unexpected foods, such as salad dressing.
- Several prepared foods contain heavy amounts of sugar but it is hidden under different names like barley malt, corn syrup, dextrose, fruit juice concentrate, maltose, maple syrup, molasses, and turnbinado in the ingredients list. Beware of these sneaky labels that can add surprising amounts of sugar into products.
